PSI's IDU Programs
PSI operates programs to reduce drug and sex-related harm among IDUs in nine countries: China (CH), India (IN), Russia (RU), Vietnam (VN), Thailand (TH), Kazakhstan (KZ), Tajikistan (TJ), Kyrgyzstan (KR), Myanmar (MY) and Mexico (MX).
PSI's IDU Program Objectives
PSI programs targeting IDUs aim to:
■ Reduce youth initiation of injecting drug use RU KZ TJ KR
■ Reduce needle sharing among IDUs CH IN RU TH KZ TJ KR
■ Increase condom use among IDUs CH IN RU VN TH KZ TJ KR MX
■ Mobilize private sector pharmacy networks to scale up delivery of sterile injecting equipment to IDUs TJ KR
■ Reduce drug and sex-related risk behaviors among drug-using sex workers CH RU VN TJ KR MX
■ Increase IDU uptake of drug treatment CH IN RU TH TJ KR
■ Increase uptake of VCT among IDU VN

Injecting Drug Use (IDU) in the World Today
■ One of three new cases of HIV in the world today outside sub-Saharan Africa result from injecting drug use.
■ Sharing needles to inject drugs is an extremely efficient way to transmit HIV – about six times more effi cient than male-to-female sexual transmission.
■ Sexual transmission of HIV is a major issue among IDUs.
■ Sharing needles is also a very efficient way to transmit Hepatitis C (HCV). In some countries, more than half of all HCV cases come from the use of intravenous drugs.
■ Opiate overdose is a major cause of youth mortality in many parts of the world today -- injecting increases the risk of overdose.
