■ One of three new cases of HIV in the world today outside sub-Saharan Africa result from injecting drug use.
■ Sharing needles to inject drugs is an extremely efficient way to transmit HIV – about six times more effi cient than male-to-female sexual transmission.
■ Sexual transmission of HIV is a major issue among IDUs.
■ Sharing needles is also a very efficient way to transmit Hepatitis C (HCV). In some countries, more than half of all HCV cases come from the use of intravenous drugs.
